Roughly fifty vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.
Officers state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Officers then located multiple other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say preliminary tests show the liquid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; officials are not yet aware of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they added.
Local authorities announced they were working "to unravel the case" and have requested to the public for details.
An important representative stated the incident made him speechless and needed to be solved quickly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a gunman aiming at residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
