Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
