Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had let in 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or was there ever a binding element keeping it intact in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, only for him admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Reports that he might quit were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio became as messy during matches as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining initial five matches, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it has been hard to tell if they are improving or imploding.

Matteo's Unforeseen Comeback

One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were advocating for him to stay there for another season. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived originally during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Finding His Best Role

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to work out the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
