Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
