An underground market for unlicensed slimming drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, according to new investigations.
Investigational Drug Gaining Traction Via Social Media
Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed weight-reducing effects. Followers are encouraged to contact these profiles privately for source information, while also receiving discount codes.
Active Commerce on Social Networks
Additionally, a flourishing trade exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison images, injection guides and assertions of next-day British shipping. Vendors promote the drug there before directing customers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Understanding Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an experimental injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies suggest it could help individuals lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.
Medical Professionals Voice Concerns
Nevertheless, doctors and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to users injecting substances of uncertain source.
Some professionals stated the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the rising price of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Legal Status and Enforcement
Selling retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be promoted or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Several content creators attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled drug, but advertising and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or imprisonment.
Service Reaction and Material Elimination
According to TikTok, the service has taken down problematic material and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The company stated it was dedicated to keeping the platform secure and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Online Marketplace Activities
Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 members selling the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in search feature, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with numerous of users, filled with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and step-by-step guides for mixing or injecting at home.
After minutes of joining one group, a vendor posted contact information, where the majority of purchases take place. The vendor sent an guidebook and promised shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.
Item Details and Pricing
Within these communities, posts show dark colored parcels with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to include new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between powder vials, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors typically sold at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how long a pen should be used, vendors give contradictory answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Safety Actions
A spokesperson for the messaging service said it regularly moderated harmful material on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Expert Cautions
“People are administering materials they can’t verify. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these online products may not include what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to current price rises for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she explained.
Her staff has already seen individuals harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We understand the frustration, but buying from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Position
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet approved … may expose patients to possibly serious health risks”.
