The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The anticipation around The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible with a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously permissive, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be approached in diverse methods, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
