This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together resides a intense examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story commences when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters face the type of challenges that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
